To the river - bologna!
The bologna method is a combination of a whip and a distance rod, used when fishing on a river. Many anglers treat it as a "plan B" when the usual flow on a full or shortened set does not bring any results, but there is also quite a group of people who made the bologna their only passion, constantly discovering its secrets and improving their skills.
This strange bologna...
Only a dozen or so years ago only a few people were fishing with the bologna method, and asking in angling stores about rods designed for this method was quite a surprise. A very long, even 8 meter long rod, equipped with guides and a reel used to cause a sensation on the water. But its advantages were quickly appreciated and today this method is very popular not only among professional anglers.
So what is fishing with a spinning rod all about? First of all, it is about a relatively large room for manoeuvre provided by the use of a reel. Unlimited by the length of the set, we can look for fish even far from our position. Apart from the mentioned rod with guides and reel we will need a floating (by no means sinking!) line, a fixed float (like with a pole or whip), and of course, the pellets and a leader with a hook. That's all! Although the bologna method seems to be quite complicated for beginners, in fact, it contains all the simplicity of the whip, enriched with a few dozen meters of the line instead of a few.
Why is the bologna method a method for flowing waters?
Bolinks are used to reach the positions of fish, unreachable with full and shortened set. But doesn't it happen on lakes as well, that our potential trophies are feeding far from shore and can't be lured at a distance of a few or even a dozen meters? Of course, it happens, but in case of still water it is much more comfortable to use a traditional distance rod - cast to the right spot, sink the line and wait for a bite. A river or canal requires constant movement, frequent switching of the set, and most importantly - contact with the float. This contact is possible only when the line stays mostly or completely above the water surface. And this is where the secret of a long rod lies. Bobolinks must keep the line in the air. The rod tip should be as close to the float as possible so that the strike is precise and happens at the right moment, and not only when we manage to wind up the slack of the line flowing downstream. Limiting the amount of line lying on the water prolongs the time our lure is present in the fishing spot, because the set moves slower. So there is no denying that when fishing on water flowing far from the shore nothing will be better than a spoon. But can't you use it on a lake with equal success? Well, some people think that you can, but you have to take into consideration that a few hours of intensive wiggling with a 7 meter rod, even if it is the lightest and best balanced one, will be more tiring than using a 3.5 meter match rod, and the fishing effect will be similar. To sum up, on a river a bologna rod will work much better than a traditional distance rod. On the lake you can try both methods, but in terms of comfort the bologna has to give way to a handier and lighter match rod.
The perfect rod - a tailor-made bologna. How to choose?
When we decide that it is time to start the adventure with spinning rod, we will have to choose a rod. After all, it is the rod that will play the main role during our expeditions for river porcupines or channel breams. When browsing through the assortment of angling stores you should know what to look for. Let's think about what to take into consideration when setting the parameters of the asp we are interested in. We should initially determine in what waters we will want to use this method . In general, medium and large rivers in places with stable, not too strong current and canals are suitable for fishing with a "river distance rod". It's worth to find out what the current is in the place we choose and at what distance and depth there are attractive places for fish - hills, troughs, bottom faults, etc. This will allow us to choose the right rod for the job. This will allow us to choose a rod with the most suitable parameters, among which we can distinguish
- Length
The most common models are 6 or 7 meters long. They can easily handle a set cast at the length of up to 20 meters. This is usually enough to get to the fish feeding in some attractive trough. Some situations require using a longer rod. Boilies 8, 9, and even (very rarely seen) 10 meters long will allow us to control the set on longer distance, but they are not recommended for beginners because of the difficult rod operation at this size. Casting and keeping contact with the float can be made much more difficult by the weather - in windy conditions even a skilled angler can have problems with keeping the rod in the right position. There are also shorter bobbers available on the market - 3, 4 and 5 metres long. These will work well on not too wide rivers and canals.
According to the "whip" rule the rod should be at least a meter longer than the depth of the fishery, which will allow for free casting with the bolo.
- Casting weight
This parameter for spinning rods available in anglers' stores is within the range of 15-40g. When choosing the rod in this regard, the above mentioned knowledge about the current in our fishery will come in handy.
- Action of the rod
A good spinning rod should have a fast tip action in order to effectively strike every bite. However, when fighting big fish, rods with parabolic action will work well, as they have better amortization of sudden departures or standing across the current - the favorite play of big bream.
- Type and quality of guides
Features that are often neglected but are very important. The performance of the whole rod depends on them. Bolonka must be equipped with guides with long feet so the line doesn't stick to the rod. It is good if there are one or two moving guides on the tip section, which evenly distribute the tension on the rod tip when hauling fish.
- Weight
With a long rod every 10 grams of weight makes a big difference. It is worth paying a bit more for a light and well balanced model. A heavy, bulky rod can really discourage this beautiful and subtle fishing method.
