Feeder - for fish at the very bottom
Nobody can deny that fishing requires cleverness and inventiveness. The objects of our hunt, fish, are still quite mysterious creatures. For generations we have been trying to learn their secrets and habits in order to attract them as effectively as possible, and despite all the extensive knowledge we often let them trick us. However, some laws of nature always remain valid - including the fact that fish usually feed on the bottom or at a minimum distance from it. Getting to the bottom with a float set is not always possible, and even if it is, it will be simply inconvenient at great depths. And here a feeder comes to help - a British patent for success, which quickly won the hearts of many of us.
A rod with a twitching tip - what is its phenomenon?
A twitching tip, or DS for short, is an effective and universal method. Effective, because, as has already been mentioned, we deliver our lure to the bottom, accompanied by bait, which attracts fish directly to our hook. The bites are signalled by the sensitive and flexible tip of the rod.
The universality of a feeder is supported by its usefulness in catching various species of fish. DS is first of all associated with slow feeding fish, among which bream is the most common prey. Nevertheless, with this method it is possible to successfully catch carps (even ones weighing several kilograms), crucian carps, roaches and in rivers also bullheads, ide and chub. But feeder does not end here! Predator hunters look at it more and more favourably, putting a dead fish or a fillet on the hook and waiting for a meeting with a night catfish or a perch, and of course pike or a lover of "corpses" - zander - zander. Catching carnivores with feeders is more subtle than with traditional ground fishing and less brutal than with live bait, but it is not inferior to those methods in terms of effectiveness.
Another aspect of feeder's versatility is the variety of waters where it can be used. It doesn't have to be afraid of fast currents of the biggest rivers and lake depths, or distances of over a hundred metres from the shore. It is enough to choose a strong enough rod to reach places where no other method stands a chance. We just have to be careful about snags and underwater vegetation - our set can get entangled in everything that lies on the bottom, so we cast in places without seaweed, sunken trunks, etc.
The great popularity of the twitching tip method is also due to its simplicity. The fishing set consists of a bait basket (often with an anti-tangle tube), a stopper and a leader with a hook - yes, that's all! A small number of elements in the set means smaller risk of problems, but you can't assemble them in an improper way - in feeder, as in any other method, reliability and accuracy counts, and neglecting them will significantly weaken our results.
Feeder is a proposal for both active anglers and those who like calm and relaxing sittings. It all depends on what kind of fish we are going to catch, the fishery and the time of year. It's best to try a few options yourself and choose your favourite one - it's hard to say what kind of feeder is right for float fishing enthusiasts, for example, because it often happened that professional anglers who could change the ground, the lure and the spacing of the rods over a dozen times within an hour suddenly found the greatest pleasure in calm, several-hour-long watching of the rod tip against the background of soothing green vegetation.
Choosing a rod - a feeder that fits your needs and possibilities
Is buying the right feeder complicated? Yes and no. If we have more than 200 PLN we will easily find a rod that meets our needs. If you have a smaller budget, you need to look for a good rod, but the wide selection of rods of this type on the fishing equipment market almost always guarantees a satisfying solution. What should we look for when shopping?
Feeder rods - length
We can find feeders from 2.9 to 4.2 metres long on the market. We should choose the length of the rod according to the fishery - heavy "long distance" baskets are more comfortable to cast with a longer rod. A rod for fishing in a river should also be about 4 m long, because it will "stand" on the bank, instead of lying on supports, like when fishing on still water. The angle of approx. An angle of about 100 degrees between the rod and the line is the optimum setting, which minimizes the amount of line submerged in the water and prevents the basket from sinking. Shorter feeders work well in milder conditions. The most commonly bought size is 3.6m - it is the most universal and recommended for beginners. You can fish with such a rod comfortably both in a river and a lake. The time will come for other lengths, when the feeder adept has already determined his preferences.
The casting weight of a groundbait rod for the DS method
Here, too, the fishery plays a key role. It is known that in a strong river current a light basket has no chance to stay in one place, so you need to use a model with the appropriate weight. We also use heavy baskets for long casts. Don't forget that when determining the casting weight we want to use we should take into account not only the weight of the basket, but also the bait we put in it. Usually the strongest feeders have c.w. of 150g, but there are also sticks with 200g casting weight. If we are going to fish in still waters or very slowly flowing waters, a feeder with the casting weight of up to 100g will be enough. Sometimes it is hard to be sure if the rod will resist our fishing methods, and then it is better to buy a slightly stronger rod - it always means less risk of damage.
Interchangeable tips in feeder rods
Although there are also telescopic feeders, a folding model with 2 or 3 interchangeable tips is much more convenient. The hardest one is usually suitable for fishing in fast current or strong wind. The more 'gentle' the conditions, the softer the tip should be. It doesn't matter what species of fish we are going to catch - the bite will always be visible if we adjust the tip well to the fishery and weather.
