Chub baits - what to use for chub?
Latin name - Squalius cephalus
Polish record - 3,71 kg, 63 cm, caught by Mr Piotr Wrana in 2008.
World results - Polish record is already a world class result, but there have already been caught chub of over 4 kg in the world! Such a chub is already an absolute dinosaur and here again the Polish angler has shown his class! On the Thames River in east London, near Windsor, our compatriot Robert Majko caught chub weighing over 4.5 kg! There were no witnesses, so his result was not recognized as a record, but the fact remains that the photos of Robert's chub were circulated in the British press.
What is interesting, Mr. Majko went to the Thames in search for pike, and at the end of his set he mounted a 30-centimetre "Real Eel" from Savage Gear.
It's another proof that chub can attack very big lures, usually intended for much bigger predators.
Chub - a glutton for bait and a worthy opponent
Chub is a glutton and when it feels safe it can eat very big lures and a lot of food. So don't regret with bait for chub. Your prey likes to eat.
Chub is a worthy opponent even for very experienced anglers. It is extremely cautious, perfectly observes and analyses its surroundings, and feeds on both plant and animal food. It is interested in insects, worms, small fish, cherries, mirabelles, or even yellow cheese and minced meat. He can stand hidden near the bottom, or go under the surface of the water in search of swimming maggots and other snacks.
Therefore, three factors are important:
1. observing the fishery to spot spots that may be chub feeding areas,
2. very quiet approach to not spook the fish,
3. suitable bait for chub, which will encourage fish to feed.
Groundbait for chub and wide feeding range
In case of chub bait the matter is very interesting, because the range of feeding interests of this fish is extremely wide. So it contains all kinds of goodies, which chub are looking for every day.
Chub is a fish of the current, so chub groundbait must be adapted to the conditions of the fishery.
How and where to use groundbait for chub?
If river's current is swift, chub groundbait should have quite compact consistency, so it can reach the bottom and crash there, encouraging fish to feed. It's very important to hydrate the groundbait properly. We have to remember about supplying bait to the fishery regularly, so that chub after starting to feed don't leave and look for food somewhere else. It happens very often, that when fish starts feeding, we forget about feeding and suddenly feeding stops. A common reason for such situations is inadequate amount of groundbait in relation to the needs of the fish. So remember not to overfeed, but above all not to starve the fish in the fishery.
There are also situations, where we fish for chubs in a calm, lazy river. What to do then? Chub much more often come closer to the surface and chub groundbait should be given in much more loose consistency, regularly and often feeding the fishery. It happens very often, that in such situations chub attack bait, right after falling into water, because competition with other fish doesn't let them wait calmly until food falls to the bottom.
In our offer you can find chub groundbait, which can be freely combined with additives chosen by you. If you plan to fish with white worms it's worth to add them to the groundbait, similarly in case of mince, peas, red worms, cherries or cheese.
Don't regret bait for chub and treats attached to it. Chub can eat very big amounts of food while feeding. You will find out about it more than once.
